AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. This program is about helping students become more successful in school through the WICOR strategies, which consist of: Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading.

AVID students complete Scholar Starters to improve their reading and writing. They complete weekly tutorials to help support their other academic classes. They also complete weekly binder checks to stay organized and grade checks to stay aware of their academic progress. AVID strives to empower its students so they can become advocates for their futures.

This year, the LQMS AVID program will take trips to visit various colleges, which will include: a community college, CSU, UC, and private university.

On Saturday September 15th, 2018, LQMS AVID Sponsored a field trip to the UCLA vs Fresno State football game for UCLA's "I'm Going to College" Event. UCLA developed this program to create mentoring relationships between UCLA Athletics and youth in the surrounding community. This program gave 52 of our students the opportunity to experience a glimpse of college life and some of them attended their first-ever college football game at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. It was an exciting game even though UCLA did not pull out the win, Fresno State won 38-14. Which, by the way, Fresno State (officially known as California State University, Fresno) is ANOTHER great California college that you could attend after high school! AVID looks forward to the next field trip which will be to Cal Poly Pomona in December.

AVID

AVID is a class about setting goals and trying to be the best student you can be! With the New Year of 2017, 8th Grade AVID Students made New Years Resolutions that would help them to become all around better individuals in 2017 as they prepare for high school. After making the resolutions, we selected ONE WORD from the writing to be our One Word Focus resolutions. Here are some examples of AVID New Years Resolutions:

"I want more time to train so I can increase my stamina to continue running."

"I want to be a nicer/happier person in 2017."

"My goal for 2017 is to open up to new things and to be able to experience more."

"My goal is to make an adventure out of this year. This year should be filled with adventures that I won't forget."

"I want to conserve more water this year. For the past year or two I haven't really been paying attention as to how much water I've been wasting."

"My goal for this upcoming year is to stay in Honors and make it through High School with Honors."

"My goal for the whole year is to become a strong, independent person."
